Markham writes Lilias that he has been away. He also tells about His son Virgil in 2 Universities and is doing well and he is proud of him. He goes on about the fact the there is a depression america in book publishing. He remembers that Lilias was looking for a translator when she wa in Europe for Markham, so he could translate some of his poems in European languages.

California poet. Raised near Vacaville, became a schoolteacher in Coloma and later in Oakland. Became famous overnight with publication of "The Man with a Hoe," his protest against brutalization of labor, in "San Francisco Examiner" (January 15, 1899). Following this success Markham moved to New York where he scored another triumph with "Lincoln and Other Poems" (1901).
